On the same day that Twitter announced its new video and group messaging features, Snapchat has unveiled Discover: a new media hub within the Snapchat app featuring content from established brands like CNN, Yahoo!, MTV, National Geographic and more.
From the Snapchat blog:
Snapchat Discover is a new way to explore Stories from different editorial teams. It’s the result of collaboration with world-class leaders in media to build a storytelling format that puts the narrative first. This is not social media.
Social media companies tell us what to read based on what’s most recent or most popular. We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what’s important.
It's an interesting play from the makers of the ephemeral messaging app. In branching out into media, Discover broadens Snapchat's appeal while continuing to cater to the attention-limited. Importantly, it also provides a way for Snapchat to monetize its offering through ads.
