Samsung to release SDK for next Gear smartwatch

On the same day that the first Apple Watch orders were being delivered to customers, Samsung decided it would be a good time[1] to announce that its next-generation Gear smartwatch would come with an SDK for developers to build native apps with.

While the news is not all that interesting, despite Samsung's efforts to drum up some hype by "teasing"[2] a round smartwatch, I did find the following statement from JK Shin, Samsung's CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics, amusing:

Samsung has actively adapted its approach to wearable device development as the leader of the rapidly developing category. Through meaningful and progressive innovation, Samsung welcomes developers and industry leaders to join this open collaboration effort to enrich and create unique user experiences for a new smart mobile life.

I wonder if this "leader" in wearable tech will be able launch the next Gear with 3,000 third-party apps ready to go on day one.

  1. I mean, were they seriously trying to steal Apple Watch's thunder with this news or do they just not understand how the tech press works?  ↩

  2. i.e. Just showing it.  ↩
